About six months into a two-year renovation project of the University of Virginia’s iconic Rotunda, engineers say everything is on schedule.
As crews excavate beneath the barrel of the nearly two-century-old Rotunda to install additional shoring for its foundation, lasers scan the structure to detect any movement of the building.
Nearly 200 years after its creation the central green of Thomas Jefferson’s academical village still maintains its hold as the University of Virginia’s centerpiece.
There was a nip in the air and a crane on the Lawn.
University of Virginia workers are replicating Thomas Jefferson’s roof on Hotel D, on top of the original.
They laid handmade bricks and helped build the University of Virginia. They chopped wood and washed laundry, cared for white children and cooked meals for faculty and students.
Renovations to the McCormick Road dormitories are set to begin next summer. The Board of Visitors approved the $105 million project at their June meeting.
A second phase of Rotunda renovations is now underway that prevents public access to the building and even parts of the UVA Lawn.
The University of Virginia’s New Cabell Hall, once the domain of cinder-block walls and bolted-down wooden desks, has entered the 21st century.
It didn’t look like much, just a crumpled scrap of metal that had been tossed aside, forgotten in a pile of old rubble.
