Laura Duckworth joined the University of Virginia in 2014 as the Occupational Health and Safety Director for Facilities Management. Laura has over 20 years of experience building, refurbishing and overseeing programs that support successful business operations. Her experience combines relationship building, strategic planning, budgeting, problem solving and being an effective change-agent. Under Laura’s leadership, Facilities Management has shown a significant reduction in the severity of workplace injuries and an increase in employee involvement. Prior to UVA, she was the Director of Occupational Health and Safety at George Mason University, has worked for GlaxoSmithKline, and was employed by the North Carolina Department of Labor, OSH Division, where she held multiple positions including a commissioner appointed position as interim Executive Director of the Ergonomics Center of NC.
Laura has served as Advisory Board Chair, Ergonomics Center of NC; Secretary, American Society of Safety Engineers-Tidewater; President, Carolinas Biosafety Association; and co-leader of the Facilities Management Community of Practice for the College Safety Health and Environmental Management Association. Laura earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from George Mason University and a master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
Safety Program Manager
Brian K. Shifflett began at UVA in 1997 as a Plumber/Steamfitter and transitioned to FM-Safety in 2003 as a Compliance/Safety Officer II. Brian has been an integral part of the implementation of safety in Facilities Management. Once a part of FM-Safety, Brian earned his Manager of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH) Certificate and an Advanced Safety Certificate from the National Safety Council in 2008. In addition to these certificates, Brian has also attended National Safety Council’s Road Work Flagger Instructor course, Supervisor Safety Development Program, and Lift Truck Instructor Program. In 2009, Brian was promoted to Safety Program Manager. Brian is currently working on the Public Sector Certificate offered by the OSHA Training Institute. Brian continues to work collaboratively with all departments within Facilities Management to support safety and health in the workplace.
William Reichert, CSP
Senior Construction Safety Officer
William Reichert came to the University of Virginia in 2015 as the Senior Construction Safety Officer for Facilities Management. William graduated from James Madison University with a degree in Integrated Science and Technology. He has attained the designation of Certified Safety Professional (CSP), through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, as well as a Manager of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH) Certificate through The National Safety Council, and a Public Sector Certificate through the OSHA Training Institute. He has also completed the OSHA 500, qualifying him as a trainer for OSHA 10 and 30-hour Construction Safety courses. Prior to arriving at UVA, William worked for SolarCity, the nation’s largest installer of residential, commercial and military solar systems, as Safety Manager for the Mid-Atlantic region. Before joining SolarCity, William worked in a contractor role as the Operations Manager for Upland Casework, supplying casework and millwork for numerous UVA projects, including Engineering Library renovations, construction of Wilsdorf Hall and the South Lawn project.
Safety and Health Training Officer
Keith Peres is the Safety and Health Training Officer for UVA Facilities Management. Prior to coming to UVA, Keith worked for Technical Environmental Services as an environmental consultant conducting safety and industrial hygiene in the Gulf Coast area, primarily in oil and gas, and chemical production facilities. Additionally, Keith worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation at the Transportation Research Council as an Engineering Technician II conducting material testing. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Pre-Medicine from the University of New Orleans in 2003, and his master’s degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in 2012. He is currently pursuing his Certified Safety Processional (CSP) certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, as well as his Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
Quality Assurance Inspector
Keith Woodson inspects mechanical rooms for the Medical Center as well as Central Grounds Zone for any safety related issues. Keith also inspects fire extinguishers to make sure they are in proper working condition. This helps keep attention on the proper way and locations to store items. Prior to joining the safety team, Keith spent two years as a Quality Assurance Inspector, talking to customers about overall satisfaction of work performed by Facilities Management. Before that, Keith was a drywall/plasterer for the renovation shop for 30 years and worked on nearly every building at the University during his time on Grounds. In Keith’s spare time, he enjoys photography, spending time with his two grandchildren and volunteering with coaching their sports.
Linda Resco is the Occupational Health and Safety Office Coordinator. She joined the team in 2015 after relocating to Charlottesville from Raleigh, North Carolina. Originally from New Jersey, she comes to us with a background in commercial interior design, facilities management, project and office administration, and event coordination. Linda most recently served at the non-profit, Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness in Raleigh, NC, where she assisted in office administration, event coordination and research grants. During her career, Linda had the opportunity to gain experience in facilities management working for the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in New York City as a Facilities Coordinator. In addition to this, Linda was an interior designer and project coordinator at commercial interior design firms in Upper Montclair and Mountainside, New Jersey where she designed commercial space and consulted on projects for clients such as Merck & Co, CIGNA Healthcare and AstraZeneca. Linda holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design.
Health and Safety Technician
Narges Sinaki is the Health and Safety Technician for UVA Facilities Management. Her technical experience includes working for a leading Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) company in Iran (TAM Iran Khodro Co.) for seven years in the Department of Health, Safety, and Environment where she served as an Environmental Expert. Her responsibilities included establishment, documentation, implementation and maintenance of Environmental Management System. She also played a role as an internal Lead Auditor for Quality Management System, and Occupation Health and Safety Assessment Series.
Before joining TAM Iran Khodro Co., she conducted third party audits for two years on behalf of Moody International Certification (United Kingdom base register) as an IRCA-certified ISO 14001 & ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and an OHSAS 18001 Lead Auditor. Narges began her career in 2001 with a private sector business company with the scope of establishing Management Systems. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering in 2000 and Master of Science degree in Environmental Economics in 2007. Her work experience also includes the Retail and Education Industries (Belk and Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville Albemarle, LVCA).
