Behind the Vents: How UVA Keeps Its Cool (and Its Heat)
Ever wonder what's actually happening behind the vents when a building stays comfortable year-round? Join FM the Sustainability team for an approachable, behind-the-scenes look at how UVA heats, cools, and ventilates its spaces — and the work that goes into doing it efficiently.
In this session, Senior Energy and Sustainability Engineer Sonya Phillips and Sustainability Engineer Manager Keith Poeppel will demystify the systems that keep our buildings running. You'll learn what HVAC is really for, get to know the major components that make it work, and discover how Building Automation Systems (BAS) quietly manage comfort and energy use across Grounds. We'll also dig into how UVA approaches energy usage and conservation — and share practical tips you can take home to save energy (and money) in your own space.
Whether you're curious about the hum of the air handler down the hall or just want to lower your utility bill at home, there's something here for you.
You'll walk away able to:
Understand the purpose of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
Identify major HVAC systems and their components
Explain the basics of Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Describe how UVA manages energy usage and conservation
Apply simple energy conservation strategies at home
