Capital Construction & Renovations and UVA Health recently celebrated the re-opening of an operating room now outfitted with new, award-winning technology.

After a five-month renovation that began in February, the newly outfitted hybrid OR29 now features an imaging platform which allows teams to perform complex procedures often through tiny incisions or no incisions at all, according to a story published in UVA Connect.

“We can now see inside the body with extraordinary clarity, without ever making a large incision,” said UVA Health Aortic Center Director Dr. Behzad Farivar. “This technology gives us millimeter-level accuracy in placing life-saving devices — and that means a safer, more comfortable experience for our patients.”

Plus, the project marked a major achievement for the CC&R UVA Health division with the launch of a pilot program that provided ongoing Construction Impact Reporting for the Perioperative Services department throughout the duration of the project, according to Abby Tanner, assistant director for project management for CC&R's UVA Health team.

This new approach led to strengthened collaboration with UVA Health to address real-time challenges; established secure communication channels between CC&R and UVA Health to minimize operational risks and impacts generated by construction; and fostered strong relationships between CC&R and UVA Health leadership. The new program has been implemented across three departments (Perioperative Services, Radiology, and Cardiology) and is used to capture operational impacts to critical patient care areas.

During a July 29 ribbon cutting ceremony, members of UVA Health leadership praised the project team for their ability to keep the renovation on schedule, especially given the challenges faced during construction due to unforeseen conditions. The CC&R team included Senior Project Manager Kevin Silson, who provided day-to-day oversight of high-level project needs; Senior Construction Administration Manager Nate Brown, who ensured execution of construction scope for the project and coordinated operational impacts with Perioperative Services; Construction Administration Manager Alex Dalton, who generated the new pilot program tool for reporting; and Assistant Director Abby Tanner, who coordinated and supported communication with UVA Health and leadership.

The project was also supported by Health System Physical Plant's Renovations team, including members of the carpentry and plumbing shops. HSPP Renovations carpenters performed the installation of all the wall-mounted implements used in support of patient care (glove boxes, hand sanitizers, etc.) throughout the room. The team also worked with HSPP Senior Welder Robert Wilmoth who fabricated a rack designed to hold the substantial weight of the clinicians' protective lead aprons, which are worn during the hybrid procedures performed in the room.
