Zoom is UVA's new telephone service provider

June 7, 2024

Telephone services and equipment are transitioning for all UVA staff

UVA Zoom Phone

A project to upgrade UVA's telephone services to Zoom Phone is currently underway and will be completed in 2025.

The Facilities Management IT Help Desk is working with FM teams to determine their phone equipment needs and assist with the transition process.

The way telephone services are used at UVA has changed significantly over the past few years. To keep up with these changes, UVA Information Technology Services (ITS) spent 18 months evaluating new, cloud-based telephone service providers. With input from a multi-organization advisory committee, ITS selected Zoom as the University's new telephone service provider due to factors such as feature familiarity, cost, simpler integration and an established user-base.

Zoom Phone will provide all users with the ability to make and receive phone calls using the same UVA Zoom app currently used for meetings and webinars. Zoom Phone will be available on mobile devices (iOS & Android), computers (Max & PC), tablets, University-approved desk phones and analog lines when required.

The service will introduce new features, capabilities, and cost savings without sacrificing what is currently available from existing UVA telephone services.

Features & Benefits:

  • Mobility: Make UVA phone calls from any internet-connected device using WiFi or a data plan (traditional desk phones still available where required).
  • Modern, cloud-based services with innovative delivery of new features.
  • Texting (SMS) capabilities (both personal and group texting).
  • Directory features & dial-by-name.
