Facilities Management employees presenting at the March 2024 VAPPA conference included:
John Trainum, plumber steamfitter in HSPP Zone 2, retired March 24 after 34 years of service. Trainum first joined UVA in 1988 and participated in the UVA Apprenticeship Program from 1993-1997. He graduated as a plumber and continued his service in the medical research buildings over the past 30 years.
Gary Allen, zone manager of HSPP Zone 2, retired April 11 after 30 years of service. Allen joined the University in 1993 as an electrical apprentice, graduating from the program in 1997. Over the years, Allen was promoted from electrician lead to supervisor and eventually to zone manager, which he served in since 2011. He mentored countless apprentices throughout his many years and was known for his leadership skills and dedication to the University. Check out photos from Gary Allen’s retirement gathering.
Scott Borrelli, zone manager for HSPP Zone 4, retired April 21 after 31 years. Borrelli first joined UVA in 1992 as an electrician, moving up to supervisor and then zone manager in 2021. Serving in Zone 4, he has maintained all of UVA Health’s outlying facilities around Central Virginia. Borrelli spent a lot of time at what was then known as the Kluge Children’s Rehabilitation Center (KCRC), where he first started, and has fond memories of watching the pediatric patients thrive at that facility. He was also known for his 1968 Dodge Charger that he brought to many FM car shows over the years. Check out photos from Scott Borrelli’s retirement gathering.
Charlie Durrer, senior construction administration manager with Capital Construction & Renovations, retired April 21 after 41 years. Durrer first joined FM in 1983 as a plumber and a welder and worked his way up to the superintendent of Utilities Distribution. In 2006 he decided to pursue a new challenge and transfer to what is now Capital Construction & Renovations. Over the past 18 years, Durrer has worked on numerous capital projects, including Shannon Library, Bond House, Gooch Dillard, North Grounds Recreation Center and the Physical & Life Sciences Building. “Between his work at E&U and CC&R, between projects he has led, and projects where he was called in to consult there is not an inch of this University that has not benefitted from his stewardship,” said CC&R Construction Project Director Kit Meyer during Durrer’s retirement gathering. “Charlie’s competitive nature and fierce sense of fair play spurred him to success, and to demand the best from those around him.” Check out photos from Charlie Durrer’s retirement gathering.
Norm Werlitz, trades utility senior worker on the Housing Zone Maintenance Team, died April 24. Werlitz – who was with UVA for close to 14 years – was known for his humor and warmth and will be missed by many.
