The UVA Facilities Management Fleet, as well as Transportation Operations and Fleet Manager Mike Duffy, recently received national recognition from the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA).

On Aug. 13, UVA received a ranking of No. 20 in the NAFA Green Fleet Awards, the highest ever ranking FM Fleet has received over the past five consecutive years of submissions. This year's award was presented at the Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference in Durham, North Carolina.

The Green Fleet Awards recognize government and commercial fleets in North America that have enhanced practices to contribute to environmental sustainability. The award consists of criteria specifically tailored around the challenges and requirements of fleet professionals. Of four universities recognized in the Green Fleet Award, UVA received the second highest recognition.

Several additional awards were presented by NAFA this year to recognize those who demonstrate leadership and innovation, enhancing fleet operations while prioritizing environmental stewardship. Duffy, recognized earlier this year as one of five finalists for the NAFA “Fleet Professional of the Year,” received the inaugural “Mentor of the Year” award.

Through spearheading the “Mindful Driving Program” with UVA Professor Brian Park and other initiatives, Duffy has been dedicated to FM Fleet's sustainability efforts. Under his leadership, the FM Fleet has regularly been recognized for its environmental impact, including receiving a 2024 Virginia Governor's Environmental Excellence Award in May.

Recently, Duffy began serving as co-chair of a UVA-wide Green Fleet working group as well as a mentor for the UVA Decarbonization Academy, to focus on fleet projects that will aid UVA in achieving the 2030 carbon neutral goals and 2050 fossil fuel free goals.

The awards serve to recognize that both the FM Fleet and Duffy serve as examples of environmental leaders both locally and nationally.
