Functional exercise center

February 7, 2024

UVA opens a new state-of-the-art therapeutic fitness center designed and built by Facilities Management.

Facilities Management designed and built the Fried Center for the Advancement of Potential, a new state of the art therapeutic fitness center within the Student Health & Wellness Center.

The new 3,000 square foot space accommodates a variety of cutting-edge functional exercise equipment, cardiovascular machines and a suspension track extending over 50 feet of turf and was designed and constructed completely by in-house forces within Facilities Management.

The innovative center was designed and built by in-house forces within Facilities Management.

“The design inspiration was to promote a sense of being outside and to connect to the adjacent South Pond Park,” said Capital Construction & Renovations Senior Project Manager Amy Eichenberger. “The intimate, light-filled space has an open, informal and biophilic aesthetic with rich shades of green, moss wall panels and multiple planters located throughout the space.”

Eichenberger worked with Design Services Manager Eugenio Schettini to design the space, with Senior Construction Administration Manager Amanda Farmer overseeing the construction.

FM's Construction & Renovation Services trades — led by Senior Construction Project Manager Hans McInturff, with Senior Construction Superintendent Kyle Jennings and Construction Superintendent Neal Aldridge — completed the construction of the third-floor space, which also includes enclosed treatment rooms, open instructional spaces, special athletic flooring, a kitchenette, and a variety of custom millwork from the FM Millwork Shop including custom benches, column wraps, cabinets and a screen built with wood sourced from the UVA Sawmill.

The Student Health & Wellness Center building was completed in August 2021, and is the first building on Grounds to achieve LEED GOLD certification under the newer version 4 LEED standards. The building also received Fitwel certification, the fourth space to achieve at least a 2-star rating on the 3-star scale.
