Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2024
October 9, 2024
Tips and resources to prioritize online security

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. In an era where large-scale data breaches and cyberattacks are all too common, it's vital that we stay informed and vigilant. Cybersecurity Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder that even small, everyday actions can make a significant difference in safeguarding our digital lives and the security of the University.
We'll be concentrating on five essential practices to enhance our online security:
- A Strong Cybersecurity Culture — Play your role in understanding and mitigating risks, ensuring that our data, systems, and personal information remain secure.
- Use Strong Passwords and a Password Manager — Create complex passwords and store them securely using a password manager.
- Turn On Multifactor Authentication — Add an extra layer of security to your accounts by enabling multifactor authentication.
- Recognize and Report Phishing — Stay alert to phishing attempts and report suspicious emails or messages.
- Update Software Regularly — Keep your software up to date to protect against vulnerabilities and threats, including by proactively restarting your computer to finish updating when the notification pops up.
Throughout October, UVA Information Security (UVA InfoSec) will provide resources and tips to help you improve your cybersecurity practices. For detailed information and guidance on how to stay safe online, please visit UVA InfoSec's Cybersecurity Month webpage.
Together, we can make a difference and secure our digital environment. Thank you for your commitment to cybersecurity! For questions, reach out to Albert Lee at albert.lee@virginia.edu.
