FM's public speaking club achieves charter membership with Toastmasters International

Facilities Management's public speaking club, Hoos Speaking, recently celebrated an important milestone.

The club, first launched in September 2022, was chartered through Toastmasters International, a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking, communication and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs.

Don Sundgren presented a talk about how he prepares for a speech during the meeting.
Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Don Sundgren presented a talk about how he prepares for a speech during the meeting.

A club is chartered once it reaches 20 members and marks official affiliation with the organization. Hoos Speaking members celebrated this achievement during their May 10 meeting with special guests, Toastmasters District 66 Director Linda Kennedy, Director of Business Services Blake Watson and Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Don Sundgren.

Toastmasters meetings typically involve members presenting speeches and evaluating each other. During the May 10 meeting, Sundgren presented a talk about how he prepares for a speech and was evaluated by club founder Kristine Vey. Hoos Speaking meets from noon-1 p.m. every Wednesday in the Pratt North trailer training room. To sign-up to attend, contact Narges Sinaki by emailing ns4xq@virginia.edu. The club is open to anyone who is interested.
