Mike Staton, West Grounds Zone HVAC supervisor, retired Sept. 16 after 18 years of service. Mike joined UVA in 2004 as an HVAC mechanic, and was later promoted to lead HVAC mechanic and then HVAC supervisor in 2009. He was instrumental in the creation of the West Grounds Zone and known for his outstanding work ethic.
Michael Light and team: I wanted to be sure to recognize Facilities Management, specifically Mike Light, for responding to 6 East in less than 2 minutes when an electricity outage was reported in multiple patient rooms, at the nurses station and the dayroom. Jon Bruneau, supervisory team leader for CC&R Design Services, graduated from the APPA Institute in September 2022.
The University of Virginia Facilities Management Fleet received the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) Green Fleet Award earlier this month. The UVA Fleet was recognized as no. 37 out of 50 fleets recognized. The Green Fleet Awards recognizes peak-performing fleet sustainability efforts and honors fleets who have enhanced practices to make a positive impact on the environment. This is the third consecutive year that the University of Virginia Facilities Management has been recognized in the Green Fleet Awards.
With the help of the Office for Sustainability, UVA has received the Top Academic Organization Award for the 2022 international Freezer Challenge. The Freezer Challenge is hosted yearly by My Green Lab and the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) to promote energy efficiency in cold storage management, which can generate significant energy and cost savings while also supporting efficient research practices. This year, 25 laboratories at UVA participated in the challenge.
