Facilities Management recently increased the compensation of approximately 600 employees.

FM leadership in partnership with UVA HR launched a market review and analysis of the hourly wages of more than 60 unique trades job classifications starting last fall. The market research presented an opportunity to increase the UVA pay ranges for many trades roles and the department is providing compensation adjustments to improve competitiveness with the local industry.

Those impacted by the pay raises were notified by email on April 19.

“This investment represents our commitment to and recognition of our people's contributions, and yet we understand there is more work to be done,” said Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Don Sundgren in an email to all FM staff. “We will continue to collaborate closely with UVA HR in pursuing market reviews and ensure ongoing competitiveness across our various service industries and professions.”

“Compensation increases, including market pay adjustments, represent good progress for our teams. We remain focused on maintaining compensation programs that will allow us to reward, attract and retain our most valuable assets — our people. We are deeply grateful for your contributions and for setting a standard of excellence that is unmatched,” he wrote.

During the April 21 FM Employee Council meeting, UVA HR Business Partner Elsa Burnette explained how FM now leads the way as a top paying organization in Central Virginia for some trades, echoing messaging of FM leadership's commitment to staff. In addition, the starting rate for apprentices was increased and those currently within the program received adjustments.

This most recent compensation increase follows a UVA-wide base wage increase in January 2020 to $15 per hour, which affected many positions at FM including those in custodial, landscape and recycling.

If you have any questions about the compensation adjustment, please reach out to a member of your leadership team or your HR Business Partners, Elsa Burnette and Sarah McComb.
