New Zoom meeting requirements

Beginning Sunday, July 19, Zoom will require passcodes or waiting rooms for all meetings. Zoom already made this change for free accounts in April 2020.

What does this mean for me?

No action is required for:

  • New Zoom meetings created on or after July 19: Passcodes will automatically be added to new meetings and embedded into meeting links. Meeting attendees can simply click the passcode-embedded link to enter the meeting.

Action is required for:

  • Meetings scheduled before July 19 without a passcode: Waiting rooms will be enabled for these meetings; hosts will have to admit participants into the meeting from the waiting room. See Zoom’s waiting room webpage for more information.
    • If you do not wish to use a waiting room for these meetings, passcodes can be added to existing meetings. *IMPORTANT: If you add passcodes to an existing meeting, calendar invites will need to be resent to include the passcode.

UVA Information Technology Services encourages the use of passcodes for all Zoom meetings. Follow these steps to enable automatic passcode generation in your UVA Zoom account before July 19. For more information on this change, see Zoom’s FAQ meetings waiting room and passcode requirements.
