Julie Thomas joined Facilities Management in 2018 as the Occupational Training Manager. In late 2019, Occupational Training grew to encompass the Diversity, Inclusion, and Respect initiative at UVA FM, which is meeting the goals of UVA President Jim Ryan's 2030 Inclusive Excellence model. In Occupational Training, Julie oversees a program that facilitates career enrichment for employees through training, education, and leadership opportunities, as well as collaborating with resources from across grounds to bring unique learning opportunities to FM employees. Julie is enthusiastic about working to enhance her colleagues’ personal and professional wellbeing.
Emily Martin serves as the Diversity and Inclusion Program Manager in Facilities Management Occupational Programs. Her role includes the development of best practices in diversity, inclusion, and equity and their implementation in the form of programs, trainings, and values for Facilities Management in alignment with the goals of the University of Virginia and the community. Prior to joining the University of Virginia in 2019, Emily worked for Building Goodness Foundation as Development Director, establishing key local and international partnerships to fulfill the organizational mission. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins University, a master’s in museum management from the Ecole du Louvre, a Nonprofit Management Certificate from the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, and a Certificate of Fundraising Management from the Lily Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University.
In her role, Emily supports Facilities Management’s programs and initiatives, including: Girls’ Day, the Apprenticeship Program, UVA FM Summits, UVA Tradeswomen, and Community Toolbox Training Days.
Fluent in French and working on her Spanish, Emily is highly engaged in the local community. This includes serving on the boards of the Field School; the Alliance Francaise of Charlottesville; the Charlottesville Sister City Commission as the Besancon Representative; the Nominating Committee of the United Way; the Membership Committee of Women United in Philanthropy; and the Workforce Committee of the Associated General Contractors of Virginia.
