The UVA Facilities Management Elevator team and contractor Priority Elevator recently hosted a behind-the-scenes tour at UVA for a 13-year-old elevator enthusiast.
Kathleen Boyer of Powhatan reached out to Priority Elevator about hosting a tour of their Richmond warehouse for her son, Henry, who has extensive knowledge of elevators. At the warehouse, Henry noticed an elevator fixture that he said looked very similar to the one that he had seen on the elevators in the 11th Street Garage during visits to UVA Health.
“And I said, ‘Actually that is the fixture from that garage since we installed those elevators.’” explained W.L. Amiss, owner of Priority Elevator, who then reached out to the UVA Elevator team about hosting Henry at the UVA garage.
In early March, Priority Elevator staff joined UVA Elevator Program Manager Eddie Morris, Elevator Maintenance Supervisor Jamie Dowell and Elevator Programs Specialist Mike Richards to provide a behind-the-scenes tour for Henry. The visit included a few rides up and down the elevators, a look at the inner workings of the top of an elevator and inside the mechanical room. Plus, the team pulled together some fun swag, including a baseball signed by the UVA baseball team.
“When I first heard about Henry and his interest in elevators from Priority Elevator, I knew the Elevator team needed to help do something special for him to create lasting memories,” said UVA Elevator Program Manager Eddie Morris.
The visit was recently highlighted in the Powhatan Today newspaper.
