Facilities Management's Energy & Utilities Department Hosts First Annual Virginia Public University Heating Plant Conference

Facilities Management’s Energy & Utilities (E&U) Department hosted on October 10 the first annual Virginia Public University Heating Plant Conference. More than 30 heat plant managers from schools including Virginia Tech, VMI, VCU, JMU, Radford, and Longwood attended. In her opening remarks welcoming the group, Director of E&U Cheryl Gomez noted the common concerns across Virginia universities.

UVa Environmental Health & Safety’s Jeff Sitler gave the conference and overview of coming legislation relating to environmental regulations. Armando de Leon, E&U sustainability manager and Longwood Energy Manager Kevin Miller, formerly of E&U Instrumentation & Metering, presented updates in sustainable fuels, renewable energy, and related topics.

Procurement Manager John Gerding gave a presentation on the Virginia Association of State Colleges & Universities Purchasing Professionals (VASCUPP) system and the cooperative use of purchasing contracts among universities in the Commonwealth.

The day concluded with a tour of the UVa Main Heating Plant led by Heat Plant Manager Kent Knicely.
