Campus Leaders Who Care

Facilities Management's Don Sundgren honored with top safety award

UVA Facilities Management Associate Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Don Sundgren was recently honored by the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) with the Campus Leaders Who Care Award. This award was created by CSHEMA to recognize institutional leaders who are advancing a culture of safety at their university.

In the last five years, Don has effectively empowered the Facilities Management Occupational Health and Safety team to create a robust safety program by engaging employees from across Grounds. With the blessing of Don and Facilities Management leadership, employees actively contribute to safety programs, create training, serve on safety committees and focus teams and are honored monthly for individual contributions to a culture of safety.

Don believes that these investments of time, talent and resources in safety will provide a return on investment, both in the short run and the long run, as a safe workforce is also productive and loyal, feels valued and has increased morale. With the support of leadership, Facilities Management continues to strive toward ensuring the University of Virginia is the safest university in the country.
