FM architect honored

Jody Lahendro selected as American Institute of Architects Fellow

February 27, 2019

Capital Construction & Renovations' Jody Lahendro was recently selected to join the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows. Lahendro, who serves as supervisory historic preservation architect for the department, was selected due to his notable contributions to the advancement of the profession of architecture.

The AIA Fellowship is considered the organization’s highest membership honor and limited to approximately three percent of AIA members. Lahendro – who has been a registered architect in Virginia since 1980 and an AIA member since 1983 – was chosen in recognition of the public service achievements he has made to the architectural profession, including the reintegration of historic landmarks at the University of Virginia into the modern life of students and community.

“I decided to become an architect when I was 12 years old,” said Lahendro, who has worked at Facilities Management since 2004 and currently serves as the project manager of the Carr’s Hill renovation and oversees the CC&R Historic Preservation team’s projects within the Academical Village and across Grounds. “For better or worse, it has been at the core of my interests, studies, work, and self-fulfillment.”

Applying for what the organization calls “elevation to Fellowship” requires sponsorship by an existing AIA Fellow as well as the local AIA chapter. Lahendro’s 40-page application included a list of projects from his UVA career and his 18-year private practice, including the renovations of Carr’s Hill, the Rotunda, the Pavilions and Garrett Hall.

“Fellowship elevation by my professional peers is the greatest honor I could receive at the end of a long, rewarding architectural career,” said Lahendro. He will receive his fellowship medal during the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony at the AIA Conference on Architecture in June 2019.
