Annual Lighting of the Lawn Annual Lighting of the Lawn

Facilities Management workers began in mid-November to string 4,000 feet of holiday lights.

Brighter this year: "At the request of the Lighting of the Lawn committee, icicle strands were added across the dome and columns of the Rotunda to give it a brighter look than in years past," says Mike Merriam, associate director for facilities maintenance.

Facilities Management Employee Warren Wood, Sign Shop Supervisor Father-Son Duo Serves Community and Saves Life

Facilities Management employee Warren Wood is a well-trained and experienced volunteer fire fighter with the Crozet Fire Department.

With his experience comes a keen ability to judge dangerous situations and to respond quickly. He says that he also "listened to his heart" on Thursday night when he and his son Robert saved a woman from a fiery crash. "It is all a part of the job," he says.


Wood is the supervisor of the Facilities Management Sign Shop, which manufactures and installs the building, special event and street signs for the University. (November 18, 2011)

In Memoriam:  William D. Middleton, Chief Facilities Officer, 1979 to 1993

Middleton was instrumental in establishing the University's Apprenticeship Program in 1982, the first of its kind to be set up by a state agency. Active for many years with APPA, the international association of higher education facilities officers, he was its vice president for three years and elected as its president in 1990. (July 27)
