Bob Carman (right), superintendent of building services at Facilities Management, received the Sacagawea Award from Ralph Allen, associate vice president for research and director of UVa Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), on June 1, 2012.
The Sacagawea Award was initiated by Allen in 2007 to honor his EHS staff for significant contributions made toward solving problems. He chose to name the award after Sacagawea, the Shoshone Native American, whose ingenuity lead Lewis & Clark to the Pacific Ocean.
Following a lengthy study, Allen said, small boxes were replaced by larger boxes for the most effective collection of regulated medical waste in labs.
Concern was raised by a member of the Building Services (Housekeeping) Safety Committee about lifting and transporting the larger boxes safely.
"We'll solve that problem," Carman said. "I will buy you the carts that you need to move this waste safely."
"I normally don't give this award outside of EHS," Allen said, "but I was struck by how Bob so quickly committed to a solution to keep his folks safe."
